Local Watercolors by Elaina Erola
January 1st to March 31st, 2017
An award-winning artist, Elaina Erola is a registered member of the Blackfeet tribe. She moved to California to get a degree in Native American studies from Humboldt State University and is currently pursuing a juris doctorate through distance-learning. She has been painting for fifteen years, most recently working in watercolors. Her paintings typically envelop scenes from either the local Humboldt Area or are reminiscent of her original Washington coast upbringing. The work is vibrant and detailed, and coastal scenes are a favorite subject.
"Having grown up a boatbuilder's daughter, the fishing industry has always been a part of my life and has dictated everything about our lives. When I was a little girl I would watch my father draft out his boats on anything. Our phone book, the door to the garage, or anything that was lying around. Seeing those drafts is how I first learned how to draw and the rest of my skills have been developed through time and practice. Whenever I draw up boats in my paintings I like to think that it's the next generation of my own father's work."
