Un-Dyed Natural Fish Eye Stud Earring
Organic living is part of the heritage of Humboldt – especially for local artist Greta Daniels whose family hails from Norway. Fish-head soup is the standard fare there, and folklore adds that children would play with the fish eyes in marble-like games. Greta uses Black Snapper fish caught by local fishermen and sterling silver to create these fascinating pieces of jewelry. The eyes are boiled, cured and dyed using a myriad of organic materials like beet juice, coffee, artichoke broth, red onionskins, blackberries and produce in the refrigerator. She also uses Ukrainian Easter egg dyes for more vibrant colors. The only caution is not to wear them in the hot tub or shower. These not only make a beautiful natural piece of jewelry, but a conversation piece. Not often can one wear eyes on your ears, or keep an eye on your spouse by giving him/her a necklace! *This is a handcrafted item - variations in size, color and design elements are to be expected.
